paid a small amount of money from the treasury (Bayt al-
Mal) to assuage his hunger, yet he returned to the treasury
(Bayt al-Mal) ten dinars of his salary each month and lived
the life of ascetics.
On the other hand, ImamAli (AS) was the most disinter-
ested in public money among all as his brother Akil narrated
that he came asking for Sa’ [measure equal to four times the
quantity of corn that fills two hands of a man of moderate
size] of wheat from the treasury, then Imam Ali said:
"Akil came asking for Sa’ of wheat and he was impov-
erished, thus I heated a piece of iron, thus he became con-
cerned and afraid. Then, I told him: "you groan from a piece
of iron heated by a creature for his sport, whereas you are
dragging me towards a fire kindled by the Almighty for his
wrath!"

tioned in Surat Al-Baqara Verse No. 188: "And do not con-
sume one another’s wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to
the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a
