UN Human Rights Council approves draft resolution on judicial system integrity

The United Nations Human Rights Council has approved a draft resolution on the integrity of the judicial system, submitted by Russia. The United States voted against the new document, Russia's permanent mission in the UN Geneva office reported on Twitter.

“The resolution aimed at preventing violations of human rights caused by fragmentation in the judicial system as well as developing relevant international legal base for ensuring equal and non-discriminatory access to justice for all,” the message says.

Earlier, Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told RIA Novosti that the resolution is to provide anyone with the right to have their case heard in a court within a single judicial system and operating under commonly recognized international standards. A fragmented judicial system and certain persons being intentionally deprived of access to a fair and impartial trial result in various serious violations of human rights.

The Russian mission noted that the US spoke against the new resolution.

“The USA voted against the resolution due to practice of illegal detention at Guantanamo,” the mission said.

The 25th session of the UN Human Rights Council is currently ongoing in Geneva.
